Pulling a 17 ft Runabout Out of a Richmond Backyard

“I am moving to Ohio next week and the boat cannot come.” That is what the Richmond boat owner told us. His 17 ft white Thompson runabout with a teal stripe had been parked in his Wayne County backyard for six years. The fiberglass hull was dirty, and the old outboard motor sat tilted up. He needed the boat removal done before closing on the house.

Our crew backed our truck up to the wooden privacy fence. The owner had removed three fence panels so we had a clear path. The main problem was the trailer. The winch was completely seized and the crank handle was rusted through. We hooked our heavy winch cable around the trailer frame to drag it out. We sprayed the wheel hubs with penetrant and tapped the drums until the tires turned. Then we used our ramp to tow the trailer and hull up onto our flatbed.

Since the fiberglass hull was still sound, a local repair yard bought it from us to rebuild. Our price sheet lists boats under 20 feet at about $75 a foot. Call 833-658-4847 if you need a boat hauled away in Richmond.

In our experience, water that sits in an open boat during Indiana winter freezes, splits the outer coating, and rots the wood inside the back of the hull. Before we take any boat to a disposal site or scrap yard, we pump out old fuel, drain the motor oil, and pull the battery for recycling. We take the title when you have it, or we sign a release of liability so the vessel is off your name.

Boat disposal questions

Can you get a boat out of my backyard?

Yes, we winch boats out of backyards every week. Our crew carries heavy straps, ramps, and portable winches to pull hulls out of tight spots, even if the trailer tires are flat or the wheels are frozen.

How much does it cost to remove a boat?

Boat removal costs depend on the length of the vessel, the location, and whether the hull is on a working trailer. Smaller runabouts on flat ground cost less to haul than heavy cabin cruisers sunk in mud or stuck at a dock.

Junk boat removal across Wayne County

Crews cover Wayne County: Centerville, Hagerstown, Cambridge City and Dublin. In early summer, many homeowners clean up their yards before moving or starting new garden projects. Old fiberglass boats left under trees tend to collect rain and become prime spots for mosquito breeding once hot weather arrives.
