Removing a 16 ft Hobie Catamaran in Citrus Springs

The June sun was already baking the sandy lot in Citrus Springs when our crew pulled up. The owner simply stopped going out on the water, and the old 16 ft Hobie 16 catamaran had been sitting out in the Florida heat for years. Its white fiberglass hull had gone dark yellow at the waterline, and the heat made the sun-baked gelcoat feel chalky to the touch.

Before we could touch the frame, we had to deal with a large wasp nest built under the center console. We sprayed the nest with a quick-knockdown aerosol, let the air clear, and scraped the hives away into a trash bag. After clearing the pest issue, we unbolted the aluminum trampoline frame and rigging. Catamarans do not sit flat on standard trailers, so we set wooden cribbing blocks under the hulls to stabilize them while we used a reciprocating saw to cut the fiberglass into three manageable sections.

We loaded the cut hulls onto our flatbed and hauled them to a landfill that takes fiberglass, while the aluminum frame went for scrap metal recycling. For a job like this, our price sheet lists boats under 20 feet at about $75 a foot. In our experience, leaving a boat outside during hot Florida summers leads to fast degradation, where rain fills open hulls and mold takes over. Before we haul any vessel away for proper disposal, our crew drains all fuel and oil and pulls the battery to keep hazardous materials out of the ground. When there is a title, we take it, and when there is no title, we sign a release of liability so the boat is off your name.

What Citrus Springs boat owners ask us

What if my boat engine is inoperable?

We take boats with dead motors or no motor at all. Our crew brings winches and heavy equipment to tow, lift, or load the vessel even if the motor is completely frozen, seized, or missing parts.

What if my boat is on a trailer?

We can haul the boat right on your trailer, or we can take the boat off and tow the trailer away too. If the trailer tires are flat or the axle is rusted through, we bring flatbeds to winch the whole setup away.
